In a Derby for the history books, SAMMARCO fulfilled our most heartfelt dream today and gave Gestüt Park Wiedingen the much longed-for Derby win!
After his brilliant victory in the 187th edition of the Union-Rennen three weeks ago, the Camelot colt had entered the starting gates as one of the co-favorites in the €650,000 IDEE 153rd running of the German Derby and proved his great class and an incredible fighting spirit in what seemed like a repeat from three weeks ago.
Breaking from gate 2 with his steady partner Bauyrzhan Murzabayev, SAMMARCO instantly settled behind the lead and enjoyed an ideal trip along the inside rails. He galopped hands full around the home turn and when the hole opened up in the straight, the colt slipped through and drew away irresistibly. A hot final battle quickly developed between three horses, but SAMMARCO never backed down, battled on tenaciously and kept the upper hand with a short head advantage at the finish post. What a fighter this colt is!
We are overjoyed! To win the most important race in this country with a homebred horse is something very special and impossible without a great team who put their heart and soul into the work with our horses every day. SAMMARCO is the first product of our SOLDIER HOLLOW mare SALOON SOLD, who was bred at Wittekindshof Stud. This win gives our three-time Champion Sire his second Gr.1 win as a broodmare sire.
